CONGRESSMAN PETERSON PLEASED ADMINISTRATION
BACKS DOWN ON BORDER TAX

WASHINGTON, DC -- "This is what happens when a group of people can come together to work against a specific issue that they think will be detrimental to this country," said Congressman Collin Peterson (DFL-7th District) today regarding the Administration's decision to overhaul its proposed border fee.

"It was only a week ago that several of us Members from border states joined together and formed the Anti-Border Tax Coalition, and already the Administration has realized that the proposal simply wasn't going to work," Peterson said. "We put a lot of pressure on the Administration because every one of us felt that the proposed fee of $1.50 per pedestrian and $3.00 per vehicle to people entering the United States would only have hurt our economy.

"Minnesota benefits from the Canadian's ability to come over the border easily," Peterson continued. "Some even cross over daily to work. The proposed border tax wasn't fair, and I'm glad the proposal has been changed."

The Administration's proposal is now voluntary, and states will be allowed to levy the fees if they wish.
