CONGRESSMAN PETERSON NAMED TO
CORRECTIONS DAY COMMITTEE

WASHINGTON, DC -- Minority Leader Richard Gephardt today appointed Congressman Collin C. Peterson (DFL-7th District) to the screening committee that will be overseeing "Corrections Day".

"The intent of a Corrections Day procedure will be to correct legislative and regulatory mistakes that destroy jobs for working families and hurt small business owners," Peterson said. "Every year, our economy is hit with $600 billion in federal regulations and many of these are just stupid. Corrections Day will give us a way to repeal these burdensome and unnecessary federal rules and regulations."

Congressman Peterson is an original cosponsor of the Corrections Day legislation. Under this new procedure, approved today by the House Rules Committee, a special House corrections calendar would be created in place of the old consent calendar. Corrections bills would require a three-fifths vote for approval, and the only amendments allowed would be ones recommended by the reporting committee or offered by that panel's chairman.

Peterson is ranking minority member of the Government Reform and Oversight subcommittee on Regulatory Affairs, which has already approved several regulatory reform measures this year.
