Washington, DC -- "Nothing is much more sacred to this great country of ours than the United States flag, and if this helps more people realize that, then we have done our job," said Congressman Collin Peterson (D-MN).
Peterson today joined other cosponsors of a constitutional amendment to protect the flag of the United States from physical desecration in a news conference on Capitol Hill.
"It's a shame that some people think so little of this country that they would purposely burn or cut or rip the United States flag," Peterson said. "While I fully support free speech and the Bill of Rights, I believe physically desecrating the flag oversteps the boundaries of decency.
"Most Americans are angered when they see people desecrating our flag. It is much more than a mere piece of cloth, and that is why I am an original cosponsor of this constitutional amendment."
