WASHINGTON, DC -- Congressman Collin C. Peterson (DFL-7th District) today received the Resources Stewardship Award from Safari Club International for his leadership in the reauthorizing of the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) in the 1996 Farm Bill.
“I put my heart into getting Congress to reauthorize the CRP,” Peterson said. “It is a program that I believe benefits everyone, not just conservationists. And the fight to get CRP reauthorized wasn’t an easy one.
“In the beginning, when the Farm Bill was in committee, I led the fight to delete two damaging CRP provisions,” Peterson continued. “The fight continued on the House floor and through the conference committee process. In the end, the bill we passed reauthorized CRP through 2002 with a 36.5 million acre cap.”
Safari Club International was founded in 1971, to provide a bright future for conservation as well as leaving a legacy of worthwhile conservation through its individual members, its chapters, its international status, and its Cooperative Matching Grants Program.
