WASHINGTON, DC -- Congressman Collin C. Peterson (DFL-7th District) today was named co-chair of a new Rural Issues Task Force for the Democratic Caucus. Representatives Blanche Lambert Lincoln (AR) and Karen Thurmond (FL) are the other two co-chairs chosen by Democratic Caucus Chairman Vic Fazio.
"The job of this task force will be to develop a unified position on issues facing rural America," Peterson said. "Right now, our primary focus will be on the Farm Bill and how it will affect the rural areas.
"When the Farm Bill is done, our task force will work on rural concerns relating to health care, housing, education, and other issues that will be addressed during this Congress," Peterson continued.
"The representation of rural America has been diminishing in Congress," Peterson said. "We need to get members of rural districts together to work on these issues so that the voices of our constituents are heard loud and clear in Congress."
Fazio will ultimately appoint about 20 members to the Rural Issues Task Force.
