CONGRESSMAN PETERSON CO-SPONSORS
SPORTSMEN'S BILL OF RIGHTS

WASHINGTON, DC -- Congressman Collin C. Peterson (DFL-7th District), Vice-Chair of the Congressional Sportsmen's Caucus, today joined the other Chairmen of the caucus in submitting a Sportsmen's Bill of Rights.

"The right to hunt and fish is increasingly coming under attack," Peterson said. "This bill will ensure that future generations of sportsmen, women and children have the opportunity to enjoy the same wildlife benefits and education we have enjoyed."

Highlights of the bill:

Requires Federal public lands be open to hunting and fishing, unless there are good administrative or legal reasons to keep them closed (as in the case of National Parks);

Requires Federal agencies to issue a statement that identifies impacts on hunting and fishing before taking any actions that might significantly reduce those activities. Hunters and anglers can challenge this statement if they think it is inadequate;

Protects the sportsmen's trust funds. Monies generated from hunters and anglers through the purchase of sporting licenses and equipment can only be used for fisheries and wildlife restoration; and,

Grants equal rights to hunters and anglers to participate in lawsuits that could affect hunting and fishing opportunities.

"Minnesota has about 450,000 deer hunters, 100,000 small game and waterfowl, grouse and pheasant hunters, and 1.6 million licenses anglers in the state each year," Peterson said. "Hunting and fishing is a significant part of both Minnesota's and the nation's tradition, and this bill will make sure that doesn't change."
