Congressman Peterson to meet with participants in the United States Information Agency's Voluntary Visitor Program regarding the Northwest Angle

WASHINGTON, DC -- Congressman Collin C. Peterson (DFL-7th District) next week will meet with a five member delegation including the Speaker of the House, three other members of the Ontario Provincial Parliament and a staff person here in Washington to discuss the problems on Lake of the Woods in the Northwest Angle.

"Fishing regulations passed by the Ontario Provincial Parliament have put the resort owners in the Northwest Angle at an extreme financial disadvantage, I hope to make some progress on this by meeting with the people who have the opportunity to solve the problem from the Canadian side," Peterson said.

"In the past few months we've been able to draw a lot of attention to this problem, and I think it's a good sign that this delegation has asked to meet with me during their trip to the U.S.," Peterson continued. "We believe this is a serious issue and I'm pleased to see that Canada appears to be taking it seriously as well."

The United States Information Service in Toronto requested that the Voluntary Visitors Division of the United States Information Agency develop an exchange program for the five member Ontario Provincial Parliamentarian Delegation. While in the United States, the delegation will be meeting with U.S. officials to discuss environmental, cross border, trade, immigration, and other bilateral issues.
