CONGRESSMAN PETERSON ANNOUNCES
HAZARD MITIGATION GRANTS

WASHINGTON, DC -- Congressman Collin C. Peterson (DFL-7th District) today announced that the Cities of Moorhead, Breckenridge, and Ada, and Clay County will be receiving federal funds through the Federal Emergency Management Agency's (FEMA) Hazard Mitigation Grant Program.

"These funds will be used to purchase flood-prone properties," Peterson said, "so that the land can be kept free of structures which would be threatened by future flooding."

The state of Minnesota Department of Natural Resources will fund 12.5 percent of the cost and the remaining 12.5 percent match will come from a combination of state and local sources.

Moorhead is receiving $1,312,275 from FEMA. This will be used to acquire 16 residential structures in the Red River floodplain, primarily on River Oaks and River Haven Avenues, and Elm Street and 4th Avenue. The total project cost is $1,749,700.

Breckenridge is receiving $1,092,129 to acquire 41 residential structures and one commercial property in the floodplain. The total project cost is $1,456,172.

Ada is receiving $289,500 to construct a new forcemain to sewage lagoons, a new storm sewer line and to purchase back-up generators for seven lift stations. The total project cost is $386,000.

Clay County is receiving $1,318,752 to acquire 16 substantially damaged homes in the Red River floodplain on 4th Street and Moore Avenue in Moorhead, and also near the intersection of RR 4 and County 75. The total project cost is $1,758,336.

"The Flood of 1997 brought damage and suffering that we don't ever want to repeat," Peterson said. "These funds will ensure that if there is a next time, it is not as disastrous for the people who live there."
