CONGRESSMAN PETERSON SIGNS PLEDGE
TO ABOLISH THE IRS CODE

WASHINGTON, DC -- Congressman Collin C. Peterson (DFL-7th District) today signed a pledge to sunset the tax code and replace it with a simpler, fairer code that rewards work and savings.

"I am a strong supporter of legislation that would abolish the IRS code by December 31, 2000," Peterson said. "I think we need to start the next century off with a better and simpler tax system.

"As a CPA, I watched as the 1986 Tax Reform Act made the code more complicated and confusing for most taxpayers, and especially for small business owners," Peterson continued. "I believe any attempt to fix the code will just make it worse. We need to throw it away and start over.

"The Blue Dog Coalition, of which I am a founding member, will be looking further into several tax reforms that would replace the current IRS tax code over the next several months," Peterson concluded.

The pledge Peterson signed today is part of the National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB)-sponsored Campaign to Abolish the IRS Code.
