LANDMARK CONSERVATION BILL
PASSES HOUSE BY WIDE MARGIN

(Washington D.C.) –  Congressman Collin C. Peterson (D-MN) applauded today passage of the Conservation and Reinvestment Act by the House of Representatives by a vote of 315 - 102.

“CARA is one of the most important pieces of conservation and environmental legislation in the last decade, ” said Mr. Peterson.  “This is a victory for all sportsmen and outdoor enthusiasts in Minnesota and elsewhere.”

CARA appropriates $3 billion in revenue for conservation programs ranging from National Park maintenance and improvements to providing an additional $350 million for state conservation programs through the popular Pittman-Robertson fund.  The bill provides $36.2 million in funds for Minnesota.

Peterson, co-chair of the Congressional Sportsmen’s Caucus, congratulated the broad grassroots effort by numerous sportsmen and conservation groups who were vital to CARA’s success.

“Without these groups pushing for CARA and contacting their Representatives, this bill would not have happened,” said Peterson.   “By working together, sportsmen and conservation organizations demonstrated good legislation can be achieved that produces real results for wildlife and the environment.”

The bill now heads to the Senate where it will be taken up by the Committee on Energy and Natural Resources, chaired Senator Frank Murkowski (R-AK).
