CROOKSTON FLOOD CONTROL PROJECT
CLEARS HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES

WASHINGTON, DC - Congressman Collin C. Peterson (DFL-7th District) today announced that the Crookston flood control project, part of the Water Resources Development Act (WRDA) bill, passed the U.S. House of Representatives.

"Mayor Don Osborne and the City of Crookston have waited patiently for this bill to pass," Peterson said. "I have nothing but praise for the way the mayor and the city have put this project together with the Army Corps of Engineers."

According to Peterson, WRDA is the bill that authorizes the bulk of Army Corps of Engineers water projects, usually passed every two years.  The total authorization included in the bill for the Crookston project is $8,950,000 with an estimated federal cost of $5,720,000. The State of Minnesota, the City of Crookston, and the Red Lake Watershed District will pay the remainder of the cost.  The project consists of channels and levees to provide permanent flood protection.

"The bill passed the House today by the overwhelming margin of 418 to 5," Peterson said. "I remain confident that the measure will move quickly through the remaining process so that Crookston may begin their much-needed project as soon as possible."

WRDA passed the U.S Senate on April 19.  Final passage is expected soon after a House-Senate conference committee works through any differences.  There are no expected problems at this time.
