Peterson To Host Veterans Meeting In Fergus Falls
New
York Mills veteran to receive Purple Heart
DETROIT LAKES,
MN – Congressman Collin C. Peterson (DFL-7th District) will
host a Veterans Information Meeting in Fergus Falls on February 20, 2001.
“I have
invited county veterans service officers from the area, along with regional
VA officials to attend and discuss issues important to veterans,” Peterson
said. “ I hope to hear from veterans and others who want to share their
questions or concerns.”
The meeting will be at 1:30 p.m., Tuesday, February 20, at the Fergus Falls Veterans Home. At 3 p.m., DuWayne Sonneberg, a veteran from the New York Mills area will be presented with a Purple Heart, Bronze Star and many other medals for his service in Vietnam.
Sonnenberg was wounded in action on June 8, 1967 while serving with the 101st Airborne Division, Phan Rang Vietnam. His military records, however, did not show him being awarded a Purple Heart. After review by the Army Board of Correction and Army Awards Section, his discharge was corrected.
“Mr. Sonnenberg is very deserving of this long-overdue recognition of his heroic service,” Peterson said.
