PETERSON TO HOLD MEETING ON
RURAL TELECOMMUNICATIONS ACCESS

(WASHINGTON, DC) – Citing a need for affordable telecommunications access in rural communities, Congressman Collin C. Peterson (D-7th District) will sponsor a rural telecommunications meeting on January 15, 2001. The meeting will be held in conjunction with the Northwest Technical College on their Wadena campus.

“We are ready to use the digital economy to revitalize our communities,” Peterson said. “Our small towns deserve access to the latest technology at a price comparable to big city technology.”

Participants at this meeting will have an opportunity to discuss telecommunications issues with local and federal officials, along with hearing examples of community-based telecommunications initiatives already in place.

The agenda includes State Senator Steve Kelly; Tony Mendoza with the Minnesota Department of Commerce; Christian Fjeld, Legislative Assistant to U.S. Rep. Bill Luther, telecommunications sub-committee of the House Commerce Committee; David Fisher, Commissioner of the Minnesota Department of Administration; Randy Young from the Minnesota Association of Rural Telecommunication, and several state legislators.

“This is an excellent opportunity to help shape the future of rural telecommunications access,” Peterson said.

Registration for this meeting begins at 9 a.m. on Monday, January 15, at Northwest Technical College in Wadena, Minn. A draft of the agenda is on Congressman Peterson’s website at:  wwwa.house.gov/collinpeterson/econdev/agenda.htm.  Please RSVP for lunch by January 12 by contacting Toni Merdan or Jodi Gonzales at 218-847-5056. Lunch and morning coffee/rolls will be provided for a fee of $10 payable at the door.
