(Washington, DC) - Congressman Collin Peterson (D-Minn) announced that the Elbow-Tulaby Lakes Volunteer Fire Department has been awarded a vehicle acquisition grant for $118,750 from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program. The Detroit Lakes Fire Department also has been awarded an Operations and Safety grant for $75,050.
“These grant awards are crucial to our smaller fire departments that are in need of a new vehicle and other equipment,” Peterson said. “The fire departments and their volunteers who cover these areas are a vital part of the public safety. Area residents are fortunate to have a strong department in place.”
The Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program awards one-year grants directly to fire departments to support local firefighters and the services they deliver. For the 2005 program, Congress appropriated $650 million in direct assistance to firefighters to improve their effectiveness and to establish or expand fire prevention programs throughout the United States.
Applicants have to demonstrate financial need and articulate the benefits to be derived from the grant funds in their applications.
