Summer fun!

Dear friends,

This week, Congress is in a district work period in honor of Independence Day and I’ve been happy to spend time in Minnesota to celebrate. I had the chance to sit down with small business owners in Willmar to discuss issues such as tax cuts and the farm bill. I also visited the Klaphake’s organic dairy farm in Melrose to see their field production and cow care. This weekend I am looking forward to celebrating the Fourth of July with events around the district. Have a safe and enjoyable weekend!

Sincerely,

Congressman Collin C. Peterson

Klaphake Organic Dairy Farm in Melrose

On Saturday, I visited Karen and Neil Klaphake’s organic dairy farm near Melrose. I enjoyed touring their farm and talking with them about caring for and milking cows in an organic dairy operation. The visit and tour were organized as part of Organic Valley’s Farm Discovery Tour – an initiative that allows consumers and folks interested in organic farming to visit organic farms and speak with their operators. Local dairy farmers also came out to join the tour. I was happy to chat with them and hear their perspectives on organic dairy farming.

National Federation of Independent Business

This week I met with Willmar small business owners that are part of the National Federation of Independent Business. We had a lively and long ranging discussion on topics ranging from tax cuts and healthcare to the passage of the Farm Bill. I enjoy hearing from businesses across western Minnesota and appreciate everything these small businesses owners do to boost the economy in our part of the state. I will continue to work for sensible policies that will boost small businesses across the country.

Last Week’s Questionnaire Results

Last week, I asked you about your thoughts on gerrymandering Congressional Districts in a partisan manner. Here is what you had to say:

This Week in History

On July 4th, 1875, the first settler-colonists from Iceland arrived in Lyon County, having traveled by oxcart from Iowa. Their leader, Gunnlaugur Petursson, set up camp near present-day Minneota.  Along with Petursson, 50 other Icelantic people trekked to Minnesota. By 1925, there were about 1000 first- and second-generation Icelanders in the community. While we celebrate the creation of our diverse country, I am grateful that the group made its home in the 7th District, as they bring such a rich history and culture to Minnesota.
